I must say it has been the best out of all the devices I have tried/used over the last few years.

So why am I writing this review now?
I’ve been given an opportunity to upgrade to the new 920XT, but wanted to give homage to an excellent device.

This review is based on my using different devices through the years. 4 Polars, 3 Garmins, and a Nike Watch.
Each device has it’s strengths and weaknesses. Polars can be small and specific. I’ve had a bad experience with one Garmin, but the others are pretty good. And the Nike watch was great and helped me through training, even though it ran out of juice 10 minutes towards the end of a marathon!

But technology has advanced and even after a number of years the 910XT is still the best device I’ve used for Running.

This is why I give it 5 stars…

It’s durable (I’ve banged it a number of times – trust me!)
It’s battery charge is long lived (not sure about 140.6 tris, but 70.3s are okay)
Easy to read (nice and big – great for a 50+ year old to read in the water or being in ‘limbo’ on a long run with 95% humidy)
Easy to customize (3 screens with up to 4 data fields and 4 events)
A Virtual partner (great to see how you’re doing for a PR or training).

It’s not a fancy watch and can be big on your wrist, but for what I use it for, it has everything I need.

I use it for
80% running
15% swimming (laps and time in a pool if I can find one)
4% cycling (I prefer a Cateye on my bike)
1% other (alpine skiing to check my HR on runs and altitude)

For running, I’ve set up the screen to allow for HR training, intervals, and races.
The vibration feature is great to run/walk or interval training.
For swimming laps in the pool, I set the distance and it always knows when I turn regardless of the stroke I use.

I was using Garmin Connect to upload my data, but it initially had problems on the MAC. So far with the new OS (MAC OSX), I haven’t had any trouble. I’m also a big fan of Nike Plus and EarnedIt, so I convert my data over to Nike (sometime with or without GPS data).

BTW – I never had any problems getting GPS satellites to sync. It takes some time when you travel, i.e., LAX to Sydney or Tokyo, Montreal, etc… but just turn it on (with a full battery) once you arrive and let it sit to find the new satellites. Then it’s quick each time you turn it on to use at your new location.

I’ve used it in open water only a few times. But each time it work pretty good for doing the overall distance. I didn’t focus on stroke analysis.

I haven’t found anything else that can match the greatness of the this watch.
But now that the 920xt is coming out with some new features, I might let this one go.
Then again, it will have to compete with the solid/sharp large 2 color display that the 910xt has. But I plan to add to this review once I get it to compare.

For now, if you are considering this watch and don’t really need the features on the 920xt I’d say get it and try it out.
You will not be disappointed!

“My sole use of this device has been to track my distance and course while kayaking or open-water swimming. I had my doubts about whether this unit could really track my progress when worn on my wrist while swimming. But it seems to work well. I swam along the shore of our lake for what the unit said was 0.6 miles. I then turned around and swam back to my starting point — it read 1.2 miles. That’s not to say I know it’s accurate, but at least it’s reproducible. It’s produced similarly reproducible results on longer, kayaking trips. So far, so good!” –agathokles “agathokles”

 

“Holy cow this watch is leaps and bounds better than my previous Garmin 305 (or whatever model the red one is). I love being able to have swim info both in the pool and open water. It also seems to find a satellite SO much faster than any of their other models. The only problem I have with it seems to be consistent with any Garmin I’ve had, which is that the heart rate monitor causes MAJOR chafing and sometimes reads far lower than my actual HR if it starts to slip (even though I have it to the tightest setting it won’t stay up sometimes)! If you’re a triathlete looking for a GPS watch and see yourself doing the sport for long enough to use it for at least a couple of seasons, it’s definitely worth the price tag.” – Neuronerd
