What People Say About the Mio Alpha:

Mio Alpha the Best Mio Alpha is a performance sports watch with continuous, precision heart rate monitoring, displayed in real time, through an optical sensor on its back, requiring no chest strap“I have not had any connection or inaccuracy issues with the alpha 1. I use it on a regular basis and I am very pleased with the functionality and accuracy. I really like the visual and audible cues that let you know where you are relative to your exercise zone, very helpful. I do wish that the display was illuminated for exercise in dark conditions but the audible cues mentioned previously helps a lot. I originally had a chest strap heart rate monitor and this one makes it look like totally obsolete equipment.” – Sleeping in Texas

“I hate wearing a chest strap. The hard plastic ones are so uncomfortable, and the fabric ones get all sweaty and gross. I was hesitant to shell out 200 bucks for the Mio Alpha, but it had generally good reviews so I took a chance. And? It’s AWESOME! It finds my heart rate really quickly, and the only time it’s not accurate is if you twist your arm around a lot (which makes sense, because then the LED light leaks out of the bottom). I tried wearing it during crossfit once and it wasn’t great; it didn’t stand a chance during double-unders, but to be fair a chest strap wouldn’t do the trick for those either.

I use mine for long runs and track workouts, and I connect it to the Wahoo app on my phone to record my heart rate (and use GPS, if I want it). The reason I’m not giving it 5 stars is because it doesn’t have a backlight, so it’s really hard to read during dark spin classes, and because I really, really wish it had storage so that I could record a workout without my phone on me (during spin class, for example). But still…never going back to the chest strap!

Update: I forgot to mention the battery life of this thing. It is unreal. I use it a few hours a week and can go MONTHS before the battery dies!” – L.A.

Mio Alpha Pros Cons Mio Alpha is a performance sports watch with continuous, precision heart rate monitoring, displayed in real time, through an optical sensor on its back, requiring no chest strap“Overall this is exactly what I wanted. I was tired of wearing a chest strap that required keeping electrodes wet- it was awkward and uncomfortable- but since I have a heart condition that requires keeping my heart rate under a certain #, I needed a way to reliably track that without all the inconvenience and discomfort of other models. I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and its comfortable and works great. Likely the HR is not 100% accurate all the time, seems a few moments behind picking up what I physically observe when my heart rate increases- but its reliable enough to keep my health needs monitored.

That said, it looses a star, and honestly maybe two- for not having any back light. Now I have to wear a headlamp over my bicycle helmet so that I can make sure I’m not over exerting my heart while biking at night. If you are like me and can hack that type of solution- this is an awesome monitor.” – Avi Rose
